Fire razes whole building - Penticton News - Castanet.net

An "extremely hot" fire at a packinghouse in Oliver took all night to control and completely douse after starting early Friday morning.

At around 1 a.m. the Oliver Fire Department received a call about a structure fire in the 5400 block of Highway 97 at a fruit packer. An OFD member who lives nearby confirmed the fire, and by the time two pumpers and two water tenders arrived at the scene, the structure was fully engulfed.

"The fire was extremely hot and efforts to get water on the fire were difficult due to damaged power lines that had come down," said OFD spokesperson Rob Graham.

Portable water tanks were set up and tenders shuttled water to the scene from a nearby hydrant across the highway.

"Crews worked very hard to get the fire under control but were unable to save any of the structure," Graham said.

They were still on scene until around 8 a.m. mopping up hot spots. No cause has yet been determined.
