Chicago Police have released thousands of files relating to the case of Jussie Smollett — the Empire actor who was accused of staging a potential hate crime against himself back in January — including video footage of Smollett with a rope around his neck.
The footage, taken from the bodycam of a Chicago Police officer, starts with two officers entering Smollett’s apartment, guided by his creative director Frank Gatson.
“He is like a star. He works on the show Empire,” Gatson says as he leads the officers in an elevator. “So I think he doesn’t want that to be a big deal.”
When the officers enter the apartment, they meet Smollett, who has a rope around his neck. Gatson gestures towards it, and an officer asks, “do you want to take it off or anything?”
“Yeah, I do,” Smollet says. “I just wanted you all to see it.”
Smollett went on to tell the officers that his attackers poured bleach on him. When he was notified that he was being recorded, Smollett asked the officers to turn off their bodycams.
Smollett told police his attackers yelled “This is MAGA country” during the attack. At the time, Chicago Police released a statement that said Smollett was fully cooperating with investigators and they were treating the incident as a possible hate crime.
But the following month, Chicago Police arrested Smollett and charged him with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report, claiming the actor had paid two men $3,500 USD each to attack him. Investigators said he made the false report because he was unhappy with his pay on Empire and believed the controversy would promote his career.
Weeks later, prosecutors dropped all charges against Smollett after the actor agreed to pay the city $10,000 and do community service. They still say they believe his report was false, but have as of yet provided no additional information regarding their decision.
Empire‘s co-creator said Smollett was not returning to the show’s sixth season.
