People Keep Stealing "Old Town Road" Signs From A Small BC Town & Their Response Is Everything - Narcity

We’ve all experienced our fair share of enjoyment and head-bobbing this summer thanks to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ track “Old Town Road.” Even if you pretend you’re not a fan, we see you toe-tapping over there. Admit it, it’s catchy. Well, the song extends past the top 40 for this small BC lake town. People have been stealing Sicamous B.C.'s ‘Old Town Road’ signs and the town’s response to it all is the most wholesome thing ever.

“We had a few signs stolen from this particular area. The name on the signs is 'Old Town Road', that’s the road that goes out to Old Town Bay which is where our marina is where we dock all of our houseboats,” Sicamous Mayor, Terry Rysz said in an interview with Narcity. “We thought you know what, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. We figured we’d make up a bunch of the signs, so we made 100 signs and we’re selling them".

This heartwarming response perfectly represents the community of Sicamous, Joe McCulloch, Sicamous Operations Manager explained to Narcity. “When I came here as Operations Manager, the mandate from Council was to have fun and to live more. You can’t really have a tagline and a promotional campaign about living more if you’re reacting negatively. The best option is to think a little more creatively,” McCulloch told us.

McCulloch went on to tell us that they’ve also sent signs off to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, and their copies are on the way as we speak.

This unexpected yet playful occurrence is exactly what the community of Sicamous is all about. “It’s been fun. People are calling in from all over to get these signs. It’s just sheer luck that we have a road called Old Town Road. It’s an interesting story and we were more than happy to take it on,” Said Mayor Rysz.

“There aren’t enough happy stories anymore, and this is a fun story. People are enjoying it. It relates to the song too because it’s a happy song. Young kids and middle-aged people, everybody’s dancing to the song".

The Sicamous Chamber of Commerce is handling the sales of these special signs. “They’ll package one up and send it anywhere you want in the world,” said Mayor Rysz. If you want to get your hands on one, you need to pick up the phone and call The Sicamous Chamber of Commerce at (250) 836-0002.

What could have been a minor crime scandal turned into a fun and adorable campaign for a positive little community.

At the time of the interview, McCulloch and Rysz were at the Chambers preparing to film a music video that featured the community’s kids and even a “little horse,” according to the mayor. We’re going to need to see that immediately.

Thanks for being great, Sicamous. Our hearts are full.
