Pamela Anderson pens open letter pleading for an end to Calgary Stampede chuckwagon races - KelownaNow

Canadian actress and model Pamela Anderson has shared an open letter pleading for a ban on chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede.

This month the stampede announced that will be conducting a “thorough review” of its chuckwagon racing event after a total of six horses died this year.

The six deaths mark the highest number of fatalities that the event has seen in one year since 2010, when another six chuckwagon race horses died during the Stampede.

The letter was directed towards Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen.

Anderson, who is an honorary director of PETA, said that she recently moved back to her native country and that her “heart sank” when she read the news about this year’s event.

“Tightening the rules—as the Stampede did in 2010—isn't enough. More than a dozen horses have died since then, because these races are inherently cruel and dangerous,” Anderson said in the letter.

“Horses have suffered from fractured legs and broken backs, while others have had heart attacks. Anyone watching can see animals foaming at the mouth as their eyes roll back in their heads.”

She added that headlines about the Stampede “show that Alberta knows these races are deadly for horses but continues to allow them anyway.”

“This cruelty and indifference do not represent the Canada I know and love. Please use your authority to end chuckwagon racing before more horses die.”
