Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King remake debuted with a “Rotten” score on the popular review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
When Disney debuted its first trailer for The Lion King, even those who were impressed by the photorealistic CGI expressed concerns about the remake potentially being a shot-for-shot retread of the original animated classic. Now, reviews for The Lion King are officially online and despite the largely positive initial reactions from those who attended the premiere, the latest Disney remake debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 58%, though that number will likely change as more reviews are submitted to the site.
Based on a total of 82 reviews at press time, the critical consensus for The Lion King appears to confirm the doubts many fans held regarding the originality, or lack thereof, in the latest Disney remake:
Though it can take pride in its visual achievements, this reimagined The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved – though for some fans that may just be enough.
The first reviews are in for #TheLionKing – currently it's #Rotten at 58% on the #Tomatometer, with 78 reviews: https://t.co/D0zgNZ0HhV pic.twitter.com/LcOUKz5bSF
