Earlier today, Cineplex announced that it would be screening a controversial film at several theatres across the country. Following the announcement, many people were publically boycotting the company. The announcement has caused such controversy that a BC movie theatre cancelled their 'Unplaned' screenings, after threats were made against the staff due to the showing of the anti-abortion film.
People all across social media are slamming and boycotting Cineplex after it agreed to host screenings of Unplanned. This anti-abortion film has raised a number of concerns and is known for being incredibly controversial.
The film, which is based on the real-life story of Abby Johnson, a Planned Parenthood clinic director in Texas who became an anti-abortion speaker, will screen in 14 Cineplex theatres in Canada for a week beginning on Friday.
Now, one movie theatre in B.C. has had to cancel its showing after there was allegedly threats against the staff. The Salmar Theatre in Salmon Arm was initially supposed to screen Unplanned for five days.
According to CTV News, as of now Salmon Arm RCMP has not launched an investigation into the alleged threats, because no one had reported any of them to the detachment.
The threats were allegedly made against the manager of the theatre. According to the Salmon Arm Observe, the board had to pull the movie from being screened out of concern for the manager's personal safety.
Since it was announced that the movie would run in multiple Cineplex locations across the country, people have been boycotting the company.
In response to the backlash, Cineplex’s CEO and president, Ellis Jacob, released a statement on Twitter on Monday defending the organization's decision to show the film.
"When I immigrated to Canada back in 1969, one of the things that I loved, and still love, the most about living here was that we didn't shy away from our differences — we embrace them," Jacob, who was born in India, wrote in the statement.
"In this instance, many of us will have to set aside our own personal beliefs and remember that living in a country that censors’ content, opinions, and points of view, because they are different from our own, is not a country that any of us want to live in".
