Gooding due in court to face new sex misconduct allegations - CP24 Toronto's Breaking News

NEW YORK - Cuba Gooding Jr. faces a new accuser and new charges in his New York City sexual misconduct case, his lawyer said Wednesday.

The actor is due in court Thursday for an arraignment on an updated misdemeanour indictment, lawyer Mark Heller said.

The charges relate to a third accuser in a case that has grown quickly in recent weeks from a lone allegation to a reexamination of Gooding's behaviour with woman throughout his career.

The 51-year-old, who won an Oscar for his role in “Jerry Maguire,” was arrested in June after a 29-year-old woman said he squeezed her breast without consent at Manhattan night spot.

An indictment unsealed Oct. 15 included charges Gooding alleging also pinched a woman's buttocks at a Manhattan nightclub in October 2018.

Gooding pleaded not guilty and has denied all allegations of wrongdoing. He is free on his own recognizance.

In addition, prosecutors have said they intend to have up to a dozen other women not associated with the criminal charges testify that Gooding behaved like that with them in similar settings - bars, hotels and restaurants - as far back as 2001.

The judge, Curtis Farber, said he'll rule in December on whether any of those women can take the witness stand.

Heller has argued the case against Gooding is an example of the #MeToo movement run amok and that overzealous prosecutors are looking to turn “commonplace gestures” into crimes.

Terminator: Dark Fate involves something from the future trying to kill someone in the present. Sound familiar? - National Post

The 35-year-old Terminator franchise now contains six movies, two seasons of TV’s Sarah Connor Chronicles and a handful of webisodes. But increasingly, its convoluted time-travel plots amount to the screenwriters shaking up a Magic 8-Ball and seeing what floats to the top. “Reply hazy.” “Ask again later.” “I’ll be back.”

Terminator: Dark Fate may be chapter VI, but returning writer/producer/creator James Cameron considers it a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It opens with a brief prologue in 1998 before moving to present-day Mexico City. There, factory-worker Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) has been targeted by a Terminator model Rev-9 played by Gabriel Luna. (Fun fact; Rev-9 was also the shade of Kristanna Loken’s lip gloss in 2003’s Terminator 3.)

Also arriving from the future is Grace (Mackenzie Davis), an enhanced soldier with a mission to protect Dani. And from the present (but also like a blast from the past) is Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, reprising the role she last played 28 years ago in Judgment Day.

While it’s great to see older female action heroes – at 63, Hamilton is just four years shy of Liam Neeson – the setup of something from the future trying to kill someone, while someone from the future tries to stop it, is easily the weakest link in Dark Fate. It’s a little too close to all the other Terminator stories, and I lost track of how many times the protagonists had to basically run away from the seemingly un-killable Rev-9.

The action sequences start out as boffo before gradually shading into gonzo. An early chase on a Mexican highway, with the Terminator literally ploughing up the road in pursuit of his quarry, is perfectly paced and thrilling. Less effective is a scene inside a military transport, in which the aircraft plummets from the sky while the passengers make their escape on a Humvee that crash-lands next to a hydroelectric dam. It’s a little hard to follow, though it does pull off the rare action trifecta; land, sea and air.

So on the one hand, Dark Fate features some intense action set-pieces, including the helicopter crash that has become something of an obligation for the franchise. On the other, a gruel-thin plot that amounts to “Move! Now!”

And yet, sandwiched in the middle, the screenplay manages a few deep thoughts about the nature of free will, forgiveness and retribution, much of it channeled through Schwarzenegger’s character. If Grace’s implants have made her something more than human, his T-800 remains a little less – but not by much, and always striving to close the gap.

And the seriousness with which he takes every assignment, whether assassination or fetching a beer, makes for some great comic relief. Hamilton’s character, meanwhile, exists on a diet of potato chips, alcohol and wrath that will endear her to many critics.

The film ends with the promise of more to come, which is also de rigueur for the franchise. But with Cameron back on board, it also effectively wipes out the timeline of the third, fourth and fifth movies – and you may recall that 2015’s Genisys, set in 1984, effectively rebooted the original story already.

It resonates with a line from Dark Fate, about a Terminator “carrying out orders from a future that never happened.” With each new film reaching further back into the past to tweak parts of the franchise history and kill off others, it’s clear who the real Terminators are; the filmmakers, and the audiences. And they’ll be back.

Meghan Markle Says She Doesn't ''Want People to Love Her'' - E! Online

Meghan Markle isn't asking for much.

She may be married to Prince Harry, thus making her a member of the British Royal Family, but she's hardly high-maintenance. Sure, the press may follow the former Suits star everywhere and some people curtsy for her, but it's out of tradition, not demand. And, according to many reporters, including one from The Telegraph, the new mum requests that people don't even refer to her by her formal title, the Duchess of Sussex.

Moreover, the reporter describes one conversation in which the Duchess told her that she doesn't "want people to love her." Instead, the writer says that Meghan wants to be heard, especially when she speaks about issues that are of importance to her, like mental health.

This was clear when the Duchess made a speech at a non-profit named Luminary Bakery, in which she said, "We get into this habit of wanting things done immediately nowadays. There's a culture of instant gratification, of the instant fix. But we aren't mechanical objects that need to be fixed. You're a wounded creature that needs to be healed, and that takes time."

This should come as no surprise considering the impact she's had on Prince Harry. Since they began dating, the formerly closed-off prince has increasingly begun to speak about his own mental health and the impact his mother, the late Princess Diana's, death had on him.

One could even say that her goal to be a voice for the downtrodden encouraged her to file the lawsuit against the British press. In their statement at the time, the pair stated, "As a couple, we believe in media freedom and objective, truthful reporting. We regard it as a cornerstone of democracy and in the current state of the world—on every level—we have never needed responsible media more."

Negative press coverage may not be an issue that all men and women deal with on a daily basis, but when it comes down to it, Meghan says that "our hopes, our fears, our insecurities, the things that make us tick... well, those are very much the same." She adds, "And there's comfort in that."

Freebies are the key hook in new 'streaming wars' - CP24 Toronto's Breaking News

Mae Anderson, The Associated Press
Published Wednesday, October 30, 2019 4:44PM EDT
Last Updated Wednesday, October 30, 2019 5:14PM EDT

If you make it free, will they come?

Apple, Disney and AT&T's WarnerMedia want to jump-start their challenges to Netflix by offering freebies and deep discounts on emerging streaming plans.

That includes a free year of Apple TV Plus for customers of new Apple devices and a free year of Disney Plus to higher-tier Verizon customers. Some existing HBO subscribers will also get the super-charged version, HBO Max, at no additional cost.

Experts say these services can worry later about holding onto customers - perhaps by offering must-see shows they can't get anywhere else or tying discounts to other services that are difficult to drop.

“Next year is a race to aggregate consumers,” said Kevin Westcott, who heads Deloitte's U.S. telecommunication, media and entertainment consulting business. “The first war is getting them to sign up for a service. The second war is retaining them.”

The new services have to attract users with marketing blitzes and the promise of original shows and movies, then build a big enough library of old favourites to help keep them. Already, HBO Max will have “Friends ” exclusively, and Disney is taking back its older movies from Netflix.

A lot of shows and movies won't be available at launch, but will be added over time. Free helps in the meantime.

Netflix has spent years building up its 158 million subscribers worldwide. Hulu has 28 million. The new players want to ramp up subscribers quickly to show they can compete.

So the services have launched the digital equivalent of the old cable promos: lure you in with discounted rates, then jack up the price after a year or two. But digital customers have more choices than cable customers of yore so a big question is whether they'll stick around.

Apple TV Plus debuts Friday for $5 a month with just nine shows and a few more coming soon. It's already cheaper than the $13 a month Netflix charges for its most popular plan. Buyers of any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod Touch get a year for free. That suggests a market of 40 million customers, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said.

Disney Plus, which arrives Nov. 12, is also cheaper than Netflix at $7 a month. Disney struck a deal with Verizon to give customers of all unlimited wireless plans and some home-internet customers a free year. Members of Disney's free D23 fan club were also eligible to buy three years of Disney Plus service up front for the price of two years. Disney is targeting 60 million to 90 million worldwide by 2024.

AT&T's HBO Max, which launches in May for $15 a month, is the most expensive of the new services. That could make it tough for AT&T to reach its goal of 50 million U.S. customers and 75 million to 90 million worldwide by 2025.

But AT&T will make the service free for about 10 million existing HBO subscribers, or about a third of its U.S. subscribers. HBO Max will also be included with AT&T's higher-tier wireless and broadband offerings.

Comcast's Peacock service will be free for many of its own cable and internet customers. The regular price hasn't been announced yet. The service launches next spring.

“I don't think customers are going to have to make difficult choices about cutting one in order to add another for the first few years,” said MoffettNathanson Research's Craig Moffett.

But companies can't run the services at a loss forever, and when discounts end and prices rise, customers may flee. After all, the services add up fast, and signing up to multiple ones could end up costing as much as the cable packages people are ditching for streaming.

There's a lesson to be drawn from the latest TV-industry attempt to counter cord-cutting. Cable-like online packages like Sling TV and YouTube TV have ended discounts or raised prices, causing customers to flee and new sign-ups to slow down. Sony announced Tuesday that it will quit offering PlayStation Vue, one of the first to challenge traditional TV packages.

Even the dominant player isn't immune. Netflix has raised prices slowly, which helped shield it from price shock, but its latest small increase has hurt customer growth.

Westcott, the Deloitte consultant, compared the streaming promotions to efforts to lure wireless customers from competing companies.

T-Mobile has long offered Netflix free to many customers. Verizon includes six free months of Apple Music with some of its unlimited plans. Many offer other deals like paying off your phone early or getting a phone for free if you switch.

“They were constantly looking for ways to steal you off other players,” he said.

How will these services keep users once they've reeled them in?

The companies can constantly refresh their services with new shows and movies, Diffusion Group president Michael Greeson said.

Cathy Yao, an analyst at Diamond Hill Capital Management, also said companies can try to create “stickiness” by bundling the services with other products and services so a customer is less inclined to unsubscribe.

For example, including HBO Max with wireless and broadband services will make consumers more likely to stick around for all three, Yao said. It's similar to how Amazon packages its streaming service with its $119-a-year Prime loyalty program.

Ultimately, content will be king, experts say. The services are investing billions into creating new shows and building up their libraries to find or create the next “Stranger Things.”

Apple TV Plus inked high-profile deals with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. Comcast's NBCUniversal reportedly paid $500 million to take back “The Office,” and Netflix reportedly paid even more to claim global rights to “Seinfeld.”

“The weapon of choice for retention is exclusive programming,” said Peter Csathy, founder of Creatv and an industry consultant. “All of these behemoths are investing billions of dollars in originals with the hope of finding the next 'Game of Thrones' that becomes 'Must See TV.”'

AP Technology Writer Tali Arbel in New York contributed to this report.

Kevin Hart trolled 'The Rock' for Halloween - CTV News

Kevin Hart thinks he nailed Halloween.

The actor, who is recovering from an auto accident in September, dressed up as his bff and frequent co-star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

But he didn't do just any look.

Hart donned the now famous 90s look of Johnson in a black turtleneck, gold chain, jeans and a fanny pack.

"This s**t makes me laugh," Hart wrote in the caption of a photo split of him and Johnson in the outfit. "#NailedIt #HappyHalloween #PeepTheNapkinUnderMyElbow."

Hart also posted a video of him showing up at Johnson's house in the outfit to trick or treat.

"I killed it with my Halloween costume this year...," he wrote in the caption. "@therock had the nerve to get an attitude with me."

Hart also used it for a little promo, adding "We are dropping a brand new trailer for Jumanji The Next Level tomorrow. Stay tuned!!!!!!"

In the video, Johnson gets his own back, taunting Hart that he won't give the diminutive star the king-sized candy bars.

"Here's what you get," Johnson told Hart. "It's bite-sized. Tiny, mini, like you."

Lori Loughlin fears she may go to prison, source tells CNN - CNN

The most recent blow came when Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli, along with nine other accused parents in the college admissions scandal were hit last week with an additional bribery charge.
"She's at rock bottom, devastated," the source tells CNN. "She knows she could go away for a long time and it's terrifying for her."
The new charge accuses Loughlin and Giannulli of bribing University of Southern California employees to get their daughters admitted to the school. In exchange for the bribes, USC coaches and athletics officials allegedly designated the children as recruited athletes, easing their admission, regardless of their athletic ability, prosecutors said.
The charge of federal programs bribery is defined as a bribe of anything valued of at least $5,000 at an organization that receives more than $10,000 from the federal government, which would include USC and other universities implicated in the alleged scam.
Loughlin and her husband previously pleaded not guilty in April to charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors say she and Giannulli paid $500,000 to a fake charity to get their two daughters accepted into the University of Southern California, falsely designating them as crew recruits. They face a maximum of up to 45 years in prison for the charges.
When asked by CNN how her marriage has been affected by this scandal the source said it's "beyond strained."
"All she wanted was the best for her daughters and she wishes people would see that," the source added. "She definitely regrets the way she's handled herself since all this came out."
The source noted that Loughlin and her daughters are "closer than ever."
CNN has contacted a representative for Loughlin for comment.
Loughlin awaits trial for the charges for which she has already pleaded not guilty. The next court date in the case is scheduled for Nov. 20.

The 'One Very Good Reason' Prince William and Prince Harry Are 'on Different Paths' - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex addressed the feud rumors between him and his older brother, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge in Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, saying they were “on different paths.”

The documentary that aired in the U.S. a week ago followed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, as they toured Africa along with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

We learned a lot by watching the program and since it aired we’ve learned of “one very good reason” the brothers may be headed in different directions. Continue reading to find out why a royal expert says they’re forging their own, separate ways with the monarchy.

Prince Harry on rumored feud with Prince William: ‘Stuff happens’

Prince Harry’s one-on-one interview with British journalist Tom Bradby — a man the royal’s known for years — happened next to a bonfire in Africa while the Duke of Sussex fielded questions about his late mother, Princess Diana, — he called her death “a wound that festers” — and revealed the terrible way he remembers her

After opening up about her and saying he’d protect his family, Bradby asked Prince Harry about an alleged rift between him and Prince William.

“Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under… inevitably, you know, stuff happens,” he said.

The 35-year-old admitted there’s been some tension between him and his brother. He also said they’re headed in different directions but at the end of the day the two men are still brothers who will always be there for one another.

“But, look, we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me,” Prince Harry told Bradby.

He continued, “We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but I love him dearly. The majority of stuff is created out of nothing.”

Prince Harry ended the discussion on the topic by saying this: “But as brothers, you have good days and you have bad days.”

The Duke of Sussex didn’t outright say whether or not he and Prince William had been fighting but he did make it sound like they’ve had their differences. And to be honest, that seems pretty typical. What siblings haven’t argued from time to time?

The ‘one very good reason’ for their ‘different paths’

So, what’s the “one very good reason” Prince Harry and Prince William are “on different paths”? Their place in the line of succession to the throne

According to Marlene Koenig, author and royal family expert, “William and Harry are on different paths for one very good reason: William is second in line to the throne,” she told Express.

“He is going to be king. His future is being mapped out,” she explained. “Harry will be the younger son of a king with a different trajectory.” Prince William’s standing means he has less freedom to explore as opposed to Prince Harry.

The Duke of Cambridge is busy preparing to be the leader of the monarchy, learning as much as he can from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his father, Prince Charles. Find out how Prince William learned he’d be king one day.

With the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — Prince Harry dropped down to sixth in the line of succession with Archie behind him. Being in sixth place allows him some wiggle room to explore a wider variety of things — even show more PDA with the Duchess of Sussex in public  — and naturally, follow a path unlike that of his brother.

HBO Max Shows Coming To Canada Through CraveTV - HuffPost Canada

Presley Ann via Getty Images

Tony Goncalves, CEO of Otter Media, speaks onstage at the HBO Max WarnerMedia Investor Day Presentation, Burbank, Calif., Oct. 29, 2019.

TORONTO ― As the battle for TV viewers intensifies, Bell Media says it’s struck an agreement for the exclusive Canadian rights of original series made for the upcoming U.S. streaming platform HBO Max.

The pact with Warner Bros., announced Wednesday, will secure a fresh selection of programming to help fortify Bell’s Crave streaming brand in an increasingly crowded market where Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus arrive in November.

The deal also confirms that HBO Max isn’t headed to Canada as a standalone option when it launches stateside next May, a move that would’ve thrown another streaming competitor into the ring.

Watch: Will streaming services end up costing us as much as cable? Story continues below.

Instead, Bell Media president Randy Lennox said TV shows produced by Warner for HBO Max will mostly land on Crave’s premium HBO tier, which costs roughly $20 per month. The subscription price won’t be raised as part of the new agreement, he added.

“We wanted to simplify this convoluted world of so many offerings,″ Lennox said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

“Disney Plus, Netflix and Amazon are inarguably ubiquitous goliaths ― but when you add all this content... to the already substantial Crave offering, I really do believe we compete on the world stage.″

Upcoming titles in the HBO Max deal, which takes effect next year, include a spinoff of “Gossip Girl,″ DC Comics series “Green Lantern,″ and “Dune: The Sisterhood,″ a project from Quebec director Denis Villeneuve that’s set in the universe of Frank Herbert’s “Dune″ novels.

But not everything on HBO Max will be mirrored in Canada, since the agreement only covers output from Warner’s television production operations.

That means certain TV shows produced by other companies will be excluded, among them Sony’s update to the cult animated series “The Boondocks,″ and “Sesame Street,″ which has a U.S. deal with HBO Max for both past and upcoming seasons.

Wildly popular 1990s sitcom “Friends″ was confirmed to be leaving Netflix for the HBO Max service in the United States, but won’t be making that same leap in Canada. And Japanese animated films made by Studio Ghibli, including Oscar winner “Spirited Away,″ aren’t part of the deal either.

Lennox said the selection available through Crave’s HBO package more than compensates for the missing programs.

Viewers will have access to HBO titles “Game of Thrones″ and “Succession″ and Hollywood movies “Green Book″ and “Crazy Rich Asians,″ as well as the basic tier of Crave, which features Showtime’s cable programs and classic network TV hits “Seinfeld″ and “Big Bang Theory.″⁣

A battle for viewers

Exclusive content has become a valuable asset for all of the major streaming players, who have invested billions of dollars in producing new shows and films to attract more subscribers and retain their current ones.

Netflix heads into the final months of the year with its strongest roster of potential awards contenders yet, including the Martin Scorsese drama “The Irishman″ and Scarlett Johansson-starring divorce dramedy “Marriage Story″ in an effort to reinforce its dominace. Amazon makes a similar play for accolades with the Adam Driver CIA whistleblower thriller “The Report.″

Those films will be trying to wrestle attention away from the star-studded TV lineup debuting Nov. 1 on Apple TV Plus, and the extensive selection of family-oriented programs making their way to Disney Plus on Nov. 12.

Under the HBO Max contract, Bell also renewed its first-run rights for Warner Bros. feature films, which include recent blockbuster hits “Joker″ and “It Chapter Two.″

Infected toe stops R. Kelly from attending court hearing - CTV News

CHICAGO -- R. Kelly's lawyer has told a federal judge that an infected toe prevented the R&B star from attending a hearing in his child pornography case in Chicago.

Kelly is detained at a jail two blocks from the courthouse and had been expected to appear at Wednesday's status hearing.

But defence lawyer Steve Greenberg said one of Kelly's toenails had to be removed as treatment and Kelly worried someone might trample on his toe as he was escorted to and from court.

During the five-minute hearing, Judge Harry Leinenweber said he'd rule later on motions to dismiss some charges and reconsider bond for the 52-year-old.

Kelly has pleaded not guilty to federal charges against him in Chicago and New York, where he is accused of a racketeering scheme to sexually abuse girls.

Leinenweber set Kelly's next hearing for Feb. 13.

Lady Gaga’s pal ‘Zombie Boy’ Rick Genest died of severe head injuries caused by accidental balcony fall - The Sun

THE shocking death of Lady Gaga's heavily-tattooed model friend Rick 'Zombie Boy' Genest has been officially ruled an accident.

The 32-year-old - who appeared in the star's 2011 music video Born This Way - died of head injuries after falling from the third-floor balcony of a Montreal apartment.

When the Canadian’s body was found, rumours swirled he’d committed suicide, since medical records showed he’d sought help for mental health problems in the past.

Gaga even pushed that theory herself in a since-deleted tweet and was forced to apologise for speculating he had taken his own life.

However, the coroner’s report found there was no “clear and unequivocal intention to end his life” adding it was an "accidental death."

It also revealed Genest had marijuana and a high blood alcohol level in his system at the time of the August 2018 fatal fall and was "highly intoxicated."

“Some close friends reported that he heard voices, particularly when he used substances,” the coroner’s report said.

“However, Mr Genest did not seem to be in a state of psychosis or delirium when he went out on the balcony.”

Cameras inside the building showed Genest going on to the balcony alone and appearing to place a cigarette into his mouth.

Loved ones told the coroner's office he would sometimes sit on balcony railings when he went outside for a cigarette.

Coroner Mélissa Gagnon said that he appeared to have fallen from the balcony of a nearby building, though there were no witnesses to the actual event.

"Considering that habit and his very advanced state of inebriation, it is plausible that Mr Genest accidentally fell from the balcony," her report states.

FASHION ICON

The distinctive model - who walked for Thierry Mugler - had nearly 90 per cent of his body covered in tattoos, including a skull on his face and a brain on his head.

His death was confirmed on Facebook by his agency Dulcedo Management, who paid tribute to the "icon of the artistic scene".

"Icon of the artistic scene and the fashion world, this innovator, against popular culture, has been able to charm all hearts.

"We received the unfortunate news at the beginning of the afternoon and members of the team have come to support his family and relatives in this dark and difficult moment.

"We want to present our deepest condolences and the legend will survive human. Thank you zb for these beautiful moments in your company and for your radiant smile."

The model featured in Mugler fashion shows in Paris and New York City in 2011 and later appeared in magazines such as GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue.

He also appeared in a DermaBlend advert in 2011 in which he promotes the brand's concealer and make-up remover.

And was in the 2013 fantasy action film '47 Ronin' starring Keanu Reeves.

Sources Are Dishing That Kate Middleton Is Fully Over Prince William and Harry's Royal Feud - Cosmopolitan.com

  • Kate Middleton reportedly hates seeing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry so "miserable," but wants to stay out of the drama.
  • Kate is fully over the royal rift between Prince William and Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been going through it lately, and Meghan in particular has found it difficult to deal with non-stop negative press. Which is something she made super clear in a heartbreaking interview about how she's "not okay." And while no one truly knows what's going on BTS of the royal family, it looks like Kate Middleton is doing her best to help.

A source tells Us Weekly that Kate "hates seeing" Meghan and Harry "so miserable," but at the same time she doesn't want to get too involved. “While Kate’s concerned about Harry and Meghan’s well-being, she tries to stay out of the drama,” the source explains.

To make matters more tense, there's speculation of a royal rift between William and Harry, something Harry touched on in a recent interview. But Us Weekly's source says Kate “hopes William and Harry will eventually heal the rift and let bygones be bygones. The way she sees it, life’s too short to make enemies–especially with loved ones. She’s very levelheaded like that. Kate’s a family girl.”

This news follows a comment from royal expert and author Phil Dampier, who told The Express, “Behind the scenes, I’m told Kate is doing her best to bring everyone together and help Meghan. None of them want to let the Queen down so Kate is trying to patch things up in private. I’m told she has reached out to Meghan and spoken to her on the phone. Kate feels sorry for her and knows that Meghan is struggling.”

Doctor Sleep review: A 'horror-tinged superhero movie' - BBC News

Not many people will have come away from Stanley Kubrick’s classic Stephen King adaptation, The Shining, with a burning desire to know what happened to the boy in the story. He was one of the film’s least engaging characters, ranking somewhere between the ghostly twins and the withered hag in the bathtub. But Doctor Sleep, a belated sequel to The Shining, wants viewers to care about the boy’s fate – and, surprisingly, it succeeds. Credible in its characterisation, rich in mythological detail, and touchingly sincere in its treatment of alcoholism and trauma, the film is impressive in all sorts of ways. But its greatest achievement is that it makes The Shining seem like a prequel – a tantalising glimpse of a richer and more substantial narrative.

    Doctor Sleep

    Director: Mike Flanagan

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Carel Struycken

    Run-time: 151 minutes

Release date: 31 October in the UK and Ireland, 8 November in the US, Canada and India

It is different from The Shining in nearly every way. Kubrick’s film, released in 1980, was a mysterious fever dream set in one hotel over one winter. The new film, adapted by writer-director Mike Flanagan from King’s own novel, is an adventure that spans the US and covers almost 40 years. It doesn’t have Kubrick’s masterly control of style and atmosphere, either – but what does? All the same, Doctor Sleep doesn’t feel like a betrayal of The Shining. Partly that’s because it is so full of references to its illustrious predecessor, from the hexagonal-patterned carpet to the fact that one character’s house number happens to be 1980. (Alas, a digitally de-aged Jack Nicholson doesn’t turn up.) But mainly it’s because the plot which blossoms in Doctor Sleep grows from the seeds planted four decades ago.

Back in 1980, Danny Torrance was a tricycle-riding moppet with the gift of telepathy, or “shining”. Considering that he met a cook who was also telepathic, it’s logical to assume that quite a number of other people could have the gift, too; Doctor Sleep tells us about those people. It’s a logical assumption, too, that Danny would have a tough time recovering from everything he witnessed in The Shining. As in this year’s other major Stephen King adaptation, It: Chapter 2, the film argues that if you have a childhood encounter with murderous occult forces, you won’t necessarily grow up to be a healthy well-rounded member of society.

McGregor has never been more sympathetic

Instead, Danny has grown up to be Dan (Ewan McGregor), a hard-drinking drifter who regularly rounds off his evenings with a bar fight, a fling with a stranger, or both. Even at his most hedonistic, though, he has an air of wariness, exhaustion and sadness: McGregor has never been more sympathetic. Eventually, Dan gets a job in a hospice where he uses his telepathy to soothe the dying, where one of the patients nicknames him Doctor Sleep. Just as he helps them find peace, he finds some peace himself.

It can’t last. Little does Dan know, but there is a rag-tag gang of psychic predators called the True Knot who criss-cross the US in motor homes, keeping their mental antenna out for children with extrasensory powers. When they locate their victims, they butcher them and absorb their life force (or something). The True Knot lot aren’t traditional blood-drinking, daylight-dodging vampires, but the intriguing implication is that every legend about vampires derives from them.

Any sequel to The Shining should have a few more scares and a lot more gore

The leader of the gang is Rose the Hat, played by Rebecca Ferguson with a formidable mix of earthy seductive charm and cold-blooded resolve. Mind you, it’s slightly disappointing that she got her florid name because, well, she likes to wear a hat. It’s also disappointing that her posse isn’t more menacing. They are supposedly mass murderers with terrifying abilities, but after a creepy opening sequence in which they snatch a young girl, they spend most of their scenes sitting around campfires in the woods, complaining. The most frightening thing about them is the thought that they might get out some acoustic guitars and suggest a singalong. Any two-and-a-half-hour sequel to The Shining should definitely have a few more scares and a lot more gore than this one.

Still, Doctor Sleep improves when you realise that it is less of a horror film than a melancholy, horror-tinged superhero movie. The True Knot decides that its next meal will consist of Abra (the charismatic Kyliegh Curran), a 13-year-old girl who has been in telepathic contact with Dan. And, as reluctant as he is to get involved, he accepts that he alone can take her off the Knot’s menu. At this stage, the plot comes down to the battle between two secret societies of code-named superhuman outsiders, so it has much in common with the X-Men franchise, 2017’s Logan in particular.

It could well start a franchise of its own. Flanagan doesn’t emphasise its connections to the rest of King’s work, but his film encompasses so many of the author’s obsessions – cats, psychics, missing children – that it will prompt viewers to ask if the events of Carrie, The Dead Zone, Cat’s Eye and Pet Sematary all unfolded in a shared fictional universe. If Doctor Sleep does well at the box office, it may lead to a spate of explicit sequels and spin-offs set in the ‘King-verse’. If they shine as brightly as this warm and well-constructed supernatural thriller, that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Kitty Scott returns to National Gallery as chief curator - CBC.ca

The National Gallery of Canada has named Kitty Scott as its new deputy director and chief curator.

Scott will return to the Ottawa museum, where she served as contemporary art curator from 2000 to 2006, to assume her new role on Jan. 6.

Director and CEO Sasha Suda says Scott is the first woman to permanently hold the chief curator position.

Scott boasts 25 years of experience at art institutions in Canada and abroad, most recently working at the Art Gallery of Ontario, where she worked with Suda.

Previously, the National Gallery's deputy director and chief curator position was held by Paul Lang, who left in March 2018 to work in Strasbourg, France.

Ann Thomas served as interim chief curator.
