Box Office: Midway Defeats Doctor Sleep - IGN - IGN

In an underwhelming weekend at the box office, Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan's sequel to The Shining (that honors both Stephen King's pages and Stanley Kubrick's vision) performed below expectations with an estimated $14.5 million domestic take.Per Deadline, Doctor Sleep, which cost over $50 million to make, was expected to pull in over $25 million in its debut weekend.

Doctor Sleep Easter Eggs and References

Besting its lowest projections, and taking the number one spot, was Roland Emmerich's WW II movie Midway, starring the ensemble cast of Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Ed Skrein, Nick Jonas, Patrick Wilson, Darren Criss, Aaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, and Dennis Quaid.

Midway focuses on the 1942 Battle of Midway, which was a huge turning point for the Allies' efforts to defeat the Axis Powers in the Pacific Theater. You can check out IGN's review of Midway here.

North American Box Office Estimates

John Cena's firefighter-forced-to-care-for-kids family comedy, Playing with Fire, landed in third place with $12 million while Paul Feig's Last Christmas -- starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson -- took the fourth spot with an estimated $11.6 million.

Terminator: Dark Fate dropped a whopping 64%, bringing in only $10.5 million - making its total domestic haul so far only $48 million.

Meanwhile, Joker fell to its lowest spot in the domestic Top 10 since its debut, though it still became the most profitable comic book movie of all time this past week.
