Haviah Mighty has won the 2019 Polaris Music Prize for her album 13th Floor. It won over albums by Marie Davidson, PUP, Jessie Reyez, FET.NAT, Shad, and more. The prize, awarded to the Canadian album of the year, comes with $50,000 in prize money. Listen to the album below.
All the other artists who made the short list will receive $3,000 each. Last year, Canadian indigenous singer and composer Jeremy Dutcher won the award for his debut Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.
Artists featured on the long list the didn’t make this year’s short list include Carly Rae Jepsen, Fucked Up, Dilly Dally, Sandro Perri, Shawn Mendes, Yves Jarvis, Voivod, and Operators. Previous winners of the Polaris Music Prize include Arcade Fire, Tanya Tagaq, Kaytranada, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Fucked Up, Feist, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Lido Pimienta, and Caribou.
