BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – The person who shared what has turned out to be a fake endorsement of the Conservatives by a Canadian comedy legend wasn’t involved in the local campaign, the party says.
However, it’s not the first time a questionable post has been removed from the Burnaby North Seymour Conservative Constituency Association‘s Facebook page.
Earlier this month, a meme of Justin Trudeau standing on a cliff edge with the Liberal slogan “Choose Forward” was removed from the same Facebook page.
While this has put a bit of a spotlight on the riding and its Tory candidate, some voters, like Ruth McLeod aren’t sure how much impact social media posts have on elections.
“Stuff like this gets thrown each way on both parties, so we’re just going to have to wait and see how the chips fall,” she tells NEWS 1130.
McLeod has a pair of young voters in her home. She says their knowledge of Heather Leung is pretty spotty, even after this.
“Not her personally, I think they just look at Andrew Scheer, it is, right? At him and just the Conservative Party in general.”
The most recent post was called out by Rick Mercer on Tuesday. The removed image features his face, along with a quote endorsing the Conservatives. However, he was quick to point out it was fake — mostly.
It calls for young people to take 20 minutes out of their day and vote Conservative — all true, save for the last part, asking for voters to throw their support behind the Tories in the upcoming federal election.
“Nope. Not real. Just a straight up fake by the candidate I guess,” Mercer writes in post asking if he was “really telling people to vote Conservative.”

“Dear @AndrewScheer & good folks at @Cpc_hq – Your candidate in Burnaby North Seymour is distributing a Meme on social media with my face and the words ‘Vote Conservative’ indicating it is a quote from me,” Mercer says in a follow up tweet. “Not true. All fake. Please Stop. #WhoAreThesePeople? #Cdnpoli #yuck.”

The post was apparently up on the Burnaby North Seymour Conservative Constituency Association’s Facebook page for several days before it was called out and taken down.
In a statement, the Conservatives say: “The post has been deleted. The individual who shared it is not involved on the local campaign.”
That page is one of the few signs of life coming from the effort to elect Leung. The candidate has not been quoted in a media interview since she announced her campaign in May, though she did hold a small meet-and-greet at her campaign office last week.
