Alex Trebek Considering Early Jeopardy Exit | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Iconic game show host Alex Trebek is considering leaving Jeopardy! Trebek’s impeccable hosting skills have graced the trivia game show for 35 seasons and more than 8,000 episodes. Winner of five Emmys for Outstanding Game Show Host, the 79-year-old has been with Jeopardy! since it debuted in syndication in 1984.

Considered one of the most recognized television personalities of all time, Trebek has appeared, as himself, in a slew of TV shows including, The Golden Girls, The X-files, Orange is the New Black, The Simpsons, and Jack Ryan. In March, Trebek shocked the nation when he revealed in a video message that he’d been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The survival rate for this particular strand of cancer is nine percent - the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. Unrelentingly, Trebek continued his hosting duties. Following a stint with chemotherapy, Trebek was optimistic while enduring the side effects of weight loss, thinning hair, and fatigue. Amid rumors of Jeopardy! finding a replacement for Trebek, the trivia show became a hot commodity when professional sports gambler James Holzhauer snagged 32 consecutive wins with aggressive gameplay.

Recently, Trebek returned to his Jeopardy! hosting duties for season 36. According to W5, the perdurable host believes his time behind the Jeopardy! podium is coming to an end. Trebek has discussed with Jeopardy! producers that he would start mulling an exit when he couldn’t adequately fulfill his hosting duties. Bearing a side effect to chemotherapy, Trebek has begun to develop cold sores in his mouth, making the enunciation of words difficult. Speaking to Canadian TV program W5, Trebek explains his commitment to treatment, as well as his hosting duties, while recognizing he can't juggle both forever. Trebek continues to remain positive and even commented on his memorial service. “One thing they’re not going to say at my funeral, as part of a eulogy is, ‘He was taken from us too soon,’” he said. As for the game show, Jeopardy! season 36 is off to a riveting start. Following his duration on Jeopardy!, Holzhauer donated a portion of his game show earnings to battle cancer in Trebek’s name. Holzhauer is slated to return to Jeopardy! for the upcoming Tournament of Champions. The 10-day event is set to air in syndication from Nov. 4-15.

Trebek’s candidness about his disease had led to people relying on him for emotional support in their battles, as he undergoes his own. Overall, the host should put his health first. It’s still unclear who would fill his large shoes as the new host of Jeopardy!, but no doubt Trebek’s opinion on the matter is vital. Despite what the future holds, Trebek of Jeopardy! will always be the beloved father-figure of America’s favorite game show.
