The Calgary Zoo’s newborn male giraffe has died just days after its eight-year-old mother Emara gave birth following three failed pregnancies.

“We are heartbroken to announce that our male giraffe passed away overnight,” said the Calgary Zoo on its Facebook page Saturday.

“We knew when he was born so tiny that it would be an uphill battle, but had high hopes that the love of his mama and round the clock care from our team would be enough to help him behind to thrive.”

The zoo said they are supporting the mother giraffe and its team following the devastating news.

Emara gave birth to the male calf last Sunday, after previously battling pregnancy issues that resulted in two miscarriages and the death of another calf within 24 hours of giving birth.

The zoo, in collaboration with a reproductive physiologist from the University of Guelph, monitored the third pregnant closely where they found her progesterone levels declined during pregnancy.

It was challenging work for staff to bring the most recent calf to term and required help from international specialists.

“Please join us in remembering our littlest tower,” the zoo wrote on Facebook.
