Joaquin Phoenix Loses His Cool On ‘Joker’ Set In Awkward Outtake Broadcast On ‘Kimmel’, Rep Says It Was A Hoax - ETCanada.com

Playing the Joker was an intense experience. Sometimes a bit too intense, perhaps.

On Tuesday, “Joker” star Joaquin Phoenix appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, and during the interview things got super awkward after the host played some outtakes from the shoot provided by director Todd Phillips.

Before showing the footage, Phoenix said that “it was a light set” and that the cast and crew all “had a really good time.”In the outtake reel, Phoenix is seen in full Joker makeup, sitting at a mirror, getting agitated. “No, just like, the constant whispering, just shut the f**k up, dude,” he says to someone. “I’m trying to like, find something real.”

After a cut and some more swearing, Phoenix adds, “it’s not a big deal,” only to mumble that “it kind of is.” He then says to someone on the set, “You started the f**king Cher thing, Larry. It’s not even an insult. Cher, really? Singer, actor, dancer, fashion icon — how is that a fucking insult?”

After a few moments, Phoenix simply gets up and walks off the set. It’s not entirely clear what was going on in the footage, or if it was possibly staged, but when Kimmel asked who Larry was, Phoenix said, “Um, um, yeah, Larry is the cinematographer. This is so embarrassing.”

Squirming in his seat, Phoenix continued, “Yeah look, sometimes movies get intense because you’re a lot of people in a small space and you’re trying to find something. So it can feel intense. But it was supposed to be private, I’m a little embarrassed, I’m sorry about that. Sorry you guys had to see that. It’s not Larry’s fault.”

Phoenix added, “My publicist will issue a formal statement tomorrow,” before asking to move on. Speaking of which, a representative for Phoenix later confirmed to The Wrap the outtakes were fake and made specifically for the Kimmel segment.
